THE BUDGET VITARA PROJECT.
This project is now complete and we will start telling our story shortly , the project ended up a little different than we first started as we decided that this vehicle would be a daily driver for my eldest son Aaron who is 16.
So this is a ground up rebuild done by a 16 year old with no mechanical background , he has started with a bare chassis and now built a nice ride
The story begins back a few years ago when we purchased the Vitara shown above , it had nothing going for it , the interior was had it , the chassis was rusty , the drive tran was US and drove like a dog , so we decided to do a budget ground up rebuild to turn it into a daily driver for Aaron to get to Uni .
The first job Aaron attacked was to strip the car , yep we mean strip it , back to a bare chassis , there was nothing left , just a bare bones body shell and a bare rusty chassis.
So the rebuild begins , Aaron and I go through his wish list , and trust me what he wanted was beyond what he was getting but we worked through it .
First up was to get the chassis rolling , we chose the larger vented disc brake system of the 4 dr wagon , this just means if he gets the engine he wants it will stop , on the rear he fitted the standard rear diff but with a LSD centre to get the power to the ground . In fitting this up Aaron chose to drop the vitara down 2 inches on Kings lowered springs , this will give him not only a cool look but the vitara will drive like a go kart , 15 x 10 chrome spoke rims were fitted with 265/50x 15 tyres to give it the fat look.
Next he choose the EFi 16valve 1.6 engine over the standard 1.6 8valve carby engine , the whole lot just bolts straight in without modification , and of course the power steer kit needed to be fitted at the sametime as the vitara would be a real handful to drive without it.Aaron fitted a EFI fuel tank and pump out of a later model 2 door , which again bolts straight in , just with some mod's on the fuel delivery lines. Fitting all of this with the body off makes it so easy , and now it is time to drop the body on .
Dropping the body on is just a series of 10 bolts/nuts and is done very quickly and easily , connecting up clutch cable , brake pipes , fuel filler hose diff breaters etc.
With the body shell being stripped out , it was time to fit a EFI wiring loom and Dash , this makes the conversion simple as it is all plug and play , then a set of sports seats, a air conditioning unit and the rest of the interior is fitted.
